A Holy sigh

A Holy Sigh
/
"And He took him aside from the multitude by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva, and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened.’"
Mark 7:33-34

Some friends brought a man to Jesus who could not hear or speak clearly, and they entreated Jesus to heal him. They probably expected Jesus to simply touch him, or speak to him, and they were no doubt surprised at what Jesus did. I especially want you to notice something we might easily overlook in this passage. It says that Jesus looked up to Heaven with a deep sigh. I don’t usually think about Divinity sighing, do you? Why did Jesus sigh? Was He saying, ‘This is not the way it is supposed to be.’

Illness and infirmity are often the result of evil in this world. And then He signed in frustration and tears, and it was a holy sigh. I wonder, as God looks at you and looks at me, when He sees what we are in comparison to what He intended for us to be, does He sigh?
