The Purpose of Stones
"As soon as He was approaching … the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully … shouting 'Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!' Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, 'Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.' But Jesus answered, 'I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!'"Luke 19:37-40
Our primary purpose as people made in the image of God is to worship Him. If we don’t fulfill this high purpose, Jesus says the very stones will cry out. A woman walking through a mall at Christmas was saddened by the sight of secular decorations and the sound of “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.” The true meaning of Christmas was nowhere to be found. Then she heard it … the music over the mall’s sound system! “O come let us adore Him! Christ the Lord.” She smiled as she thought, “The stones are crying out!”
God created the universe with purpose, so there is not one useless thing anywhere – not even a stone. And one of its purposes is to cry out the Good News of Jesus Christ if no one else will! But let’s not make the stones do what we were created to do. Let’s praise God joyfully every day.
